How are things with the new owner of the bar? I haven't heard much. Will we be able to have the same fun we've always had in past years?

I think most people are taking the "wait and see" approach. Don't know what time you were there, Lee, but I heard it was pretty dead (on New Year's Eve). The owners are in FL for the winter and haven't heard when they'll be back or open. Beer!

So no rave reviews yet. Did the past owners close during the winter as well?

Does anyone remember the owner from years and years ago? i don't know his real name but he was really good friends with my dad and my dad called him "sponge". i was a kid then, but he seemed really nice and always gave me candy and stuff. does the bar still look the same as it did back then? i don't think it had carpet then.

Hi Chanda,

"Sponge" was Jim Rogers, and it wasn't all that long ago that he ran the bar. He took over in the early to mid-80s and ran it until the early '90s. I think he ran into some problems, don't know the circumstances. I have a picture of him somewhere, I think.

Prior to Jim Rogers and the Bois Blanc Tavern years, it was Saville's Saloon, which shared the floorspace for awhile with The Orchard Restaurant (that was a very weird time). Prior to that, during the '60s and '70s, it was Andy's Place, owned/operated by Andy and Opal Anderson. That's when I was a kid, and I'll always remember Andy and Opal. We kept in touch with Opal until she passed away about 10 years ago; Andy had died some years earlier. He used to give me Hershey bars and keep me entertained while my Dad chatted with the other folks at the bar.

I can tell you that, for all the changes through the years, the place is more or less the same as it was in 1973. (I was 2 years old then, so I can't speak for what it was like prior to that...) I haven't been there since the newest owners took over from Barb, but am curious.

Dan
