1987 Feb 22 Smile Smile

Two Bois Blanc Island men survived a dip in freezing water after their snowmobiles broke through the ice.

Stacy Van Horn and Al White were returning to Bois Blanc Island after a drive to Cheboygan when their snowmobiles broke through and sank about a mile-and-a-half from Sand Bay.

The pair was able to walk ashore, and they hoped to recover their snowmobiles from the water, depending on ice conditions.

Wow! Twenty years ago. Time flies.

They were on the tree line and noticed a wet spot ahead. They had driven over the same spot on the way to town earlier. Al slowed down as they went onto the spot. Al was holding on with his elbows for a while when the thought came to use his jack knife to pull himself out. His hands were so cold that he feared dropping it to the bottom. He gradually pulled himself out. He had been concentrating so much on saving himself that he had paid no attention to what Stacy was up to and the same goes for Stacy. they never said a word to each other while in the hole and were facing different directions. Somehow, Stacy had gotten the same idea at about the same time that Al had, to use his jack knife.

They ran to Sand Bay and broke into Mike Gahn and Sue VanVoorhees place, the old Pinney log cabin. They built a fire and put on Mikes clothes.

Now days if you watch Al cross wet spots on the ice, he will be going like a bat out of hell.

That didn't happen in 1967 though.. More like 87.. or later.. I remember Stacy calling me from Su's.. He was still chattering and people were on the way to help.. Not long after, when we went across on separate snowmobiles.. Stacy was behind me and I kept checking him as we blasted across.. One time I checked and all I saw was a black hole on the ice! I let go of my snowmobile and dropped to the ice, crawling back toward the hole, when Stacy pulled up and was trying to figure out what I was doing!

He had passed me up on my blind side when I was looking back.. The black hole was a cloud shadow! Laughing Laughing What a fright! Shocked

Susie's right. That didn't happen 40 years ago. It's more like 20 years, and they never did recover their machine.

Steve

I went in and read that article and just a few paragraphs above it does say: Skipping ahead 20 years. So it did infact happen in '87.
