The Coast Gaurd opened the channel yesterday to a few ships, supposedly just for the day.

Here is a picture of how the trees look after the storm. http://www.bois-blanc.com/phpBB2/album_page.php?pic_id=1953

The inland lake ice is still not drifted and hard.

The ice has continued to disappear. At least up until today. Even all the ice in Sand Bay is gone. The edge of the ice is up near the shore in front of my place on Feb. 6.

One neat thing. I was looking out the picture window and there was a great big otter playing on the edge of the ice and water. A rare treat.

How are the snow conditions on the Island? The southwestern side of the lower has around a foot on flat ground.

The water levels went down this fall. That is normal. I didn't notice that it had gone down 2 feet though.

The snow is maybe a little over a foot on the level, but with packed drifts in a lot of places.

The ice is back mostly all rough. That means we have had ice for two days. It was all open on the 9th.

A few of us are going out today to see if the ice is thick enough for travel. I'll let you all know what we find out.

THE ICE IS TOO THIN.

We found the ice to be only about an inch thick in the main channel. The windrows of jumbled up ice was a foot thick or more. That wind was something to do that. The thickness was 8" or more until we got to the edge of the windrows. We reached out from the edge and the spud would go through with one thrust.

I believe the cold weather and no wind has set the ice up good. Only problrm Mike is gone for a month, and I don't think there is anybody else going to walk and check the ice.

I think that I graduated from that. I got older and wiser I think. We need someone that isn't playing with a full deck and two legs so they can run like hell. Like I used to be. There, Now it is your turn Tony, I saved you so you didn't have to say it

You know I can't do it anymore with my new hip. It's so heavy i might sink.
And I'm just a little slower than the days of riding with Uncle Ray in his air sled. Although he was pretty spire for and old duffer. I though he was going to get a piggy back ride from me at first.

Rumor has it that a few brave lads are checking the ice as I type Very Happy Men from both sides, proding and measuring. My fingers are crossed to do a crossing next weekend.

Blue 72 from what I hear form Spartin-1 you may want to wait a couple of days to make sure it's thick enough.
