Mike - What are the yellow plants that are growing along the shore at Snake Island? We just noticed them today but didn't walk out there to look so not sure how big of flowers they were. |

I also noticed a large patch of yellow carpeting the shore on the West side of the trail going out to the "island". I didn't go check, but a good guess is horned bladderwort. I posted a picture of a group last summer, July 27. I will post a close-up of a picture taken at Sundew Pond this month.

Sometimes when round-leaved and linear-leaved sundew grow close together, a rare thing, they will produce a hybrid sterile plant. It is very rare to run across one. The habitat has to be just right.

If you walk the beaches right now you will find Kalm's Lobelia. Look close and you may find all white ones.

I really like the sound of the name. You would think it was a big showy orchid or something like that. Instead, it has small flowers with only two petals. Found behind my house about 40 feet away.
I want to add that there is also a miniture version of this same plant on BBI. It is called Small or Dwarf Enchanter's Nightshade. Also, neither are in the nightshade family.

Drama on a flower. The spider has a very appropriate name. It can be whitish or yellow depending on what flowers it hangs out on.

The picture shows a single plant in July before disk flowers appear. It has no ray flowers. The insets show a before and after flowering picture.
BBI is the northern most point in the range of this plant. See them at Moon Bay. They are big and spotted easily.

The fruits of this plant are shaped like little rockets. It has four petaled flowers like all the other mustard plants.

I'm going to concentrate on asters for a while. Last year I shied away. This aster is very common on the beaches right now.

I'm trying to make pictures to ID plants, so sometimes they are not very pretty. This one's identifying features are the stems and leaves. It has appressed (laid down) hairs, and entire (not toothed) leaves. It is not an aster. Supposedly, the flowers prevent fleas.

This one was not easy. It took me three weeks to figure it out. It should not be called a purple stemmed aster, because in many cases on BBI it will not have a purple stem. It can also be confused with fleabane because it has so many rays.
I have added hairy to the name below.

I have heard that ragweed was what causes hay fever, but I never knew what it looked like. I found this growing in Sand Bay Orchard, as it is now called, earlier this summer. I was surprised to find that it is Western ragweed introduced into Michigan around the year 1900.
