How much is a bail of hay? My Dad Victor may need more for the winter.
And seeing that Binobamalodin won I may need some to feed my family this winter. Laughing

I heard that there has been a feud going on for years between the hunters on private land v public land.

The private land hunters brought in so much food that they enticed most of the deer off the state lands making it almost impossible for the state land hunter to see any deer.

In retaliation, the state land hunters went to extrodinary measures to bait the deer back onto the state lands.

So now you might find feeding stations almost anywhere on the island, private or state.

Is that true?

As most know, baiting has been banned this season in the LP... and the DNR is raking in the big $$$ issuing $150 tickets. How does the DNR find the bait piles way back in the woods? They fly over at night with infra red spotting equipment. The deer stand out like christmas tree bulbs. They see a concentration of deer, they mark it with GPS and send someone in to investigate. At least thats what I heard from an "informed source" and I don't doubt it. DNR has busted a slew around here. So be advised if you are considering baiting anyway (applies only to the lower peninsula, not BBI)

If there are baiting wars going, on the island... who ever puts out the most bait, doesn't win, they lose. Deer aren't totally stupid. After opening day of rifle season they disappear and go nocturnal. They eat all night and lay low all day. They won't move around if they aren't hungry.

Personally, I feel that the baiting ban will return thigs back to deer hunting rather than "deer shooting". There is an entire generation that thinks deer hunting amounts to dinging a deer munching on a carrot. Thats is what the "sport" has become over the last 20 years. Not much sport to it.

I just wonder how many will quit "hunting" now that they have to actually hunt?

Ya better get over it....Obama won...end of story....a landslide, I might add. And, he had a lot of bad crap, from this past administration, dumped in his lap to try and fix.

Feed your family with hay?????????? Interesting.

My Grandma Calkins that lived in the house across from the school
would take in hunters from down state ..she cooked for them and had a place for them to sleep ..they were a good bunch ..one year they brought up a new guy with them and he shot a deer in my grandmas yard .. I think he was standing just outside of the door ... that did not go well with my Grandma ..she had a fit.. they did not bring him up again for sure ..

The hunters really enjoyed their time on the island ... playing cards at night ...... and eating home cooked meals ... .. I often thought that was the main reason a few of them came up ....
that was about 40 or more years ago ....

Theeislandgirl,
That was way back in the good old days when it was a sin to bait deer.

But, I always wondered why those hunters that grandma took in would bring a 55 gallon container full of apple cider. I asked one of them once why they brought so much cider. I was told that they loved the stuff and drank a lot of it while they were out in the woods. I was a kid and believed them.
