My son and I are having a discussion on the correct pronunciation for the island. I say it is similar to BOYS BLANK in english. He claims it is said, Bob Blow? Who is correct or are we both wrong?javascript:emoticon('Shocked')

It sounds like BOYS BLANK in English. The nickname for the island is BOBLO. The French pronunciation is a little different.

The English speaking people have corrupted the way it is said by pronouncing it the way the French spelled it.

Most regular Americans who lived in this area did not know French. They said it the way they saw it. Bois Blanc = Boyiss Blank. When some attempted to say Bois Blanc in French, it got corrupted from (Bwaa Blong ?) into Bob-Low, Bobby-Loo, etc.

Most people who have lived here said Boyiss Blank. The s on the end of Bois is pronounced like a soft c or like the iss in the word hiss. The oi is pronounced like the oy in ahoy or boy.

This girl that's lived here since 1954 has always pronounced it Bois (soft S) Blank. I've never called it Boyz (hard S) Blank. But mostly I call it Bob-Lo. It's HOME!!!!
