Not much year round employment on the island, especially with the down turn in the economy and in the construction business. Only about 45-55 year round residents. A lot of activity during the summer and if you can make enough during the summer to cover for the December to May period or have some other means of income, you might be fine. Mackinac or Beaver Island have much more full-time activity. Housing on the island can be very affordable if you are not on the lakefront.

Call Larry at Hawk's Landing. He knows about houses for sale. There is one in the Pines that could be made into a year round home. It sets by itself in the back of the Pines.

I don't know your situation or financial resources. Married? Kids? Divorced? Single?

When the school needed more kids, one suggestion was to advertise for divorced moms that were getting great child support. They would have an external income and keep the doors to the school open besides.

Income here is the big problem. Year round income would be, taking care of the roads- covered. Post office- covered. School- covered. Working in the woods- possible. Township- covered.

Summer work that would get enough income to last though the winter is based mainly on money brought here by the "summer people". They want food and drinks. That is covered, although Barb Schlund will sell the tavern if you have the money. You could live in the back I suppose. Temporary visitors is covered by two places on the island.

You could buy houses and do summer rentals. A winter rental is possible, but would be complicated.

Living and working here is possible, but is tough.
