Alice Viola (Baker) Smith, age 96 of Bois Blanc Island and Cheboygan passed away quietly on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at the Hospice House following a brief illness. She was born July 25, 1914 on a farm near Hart, MI to Henry Cornelius and Lelah Nancy (Mitchell) Baker. On August 12, 1934 she married Alvin “Al” Burnard Smith and moved to Bois Blanc Island where she has made her home for the past 77 years.

Alice was a gentle soul with a big heart. She was known for her willingness to always offer a helping hand, cook a meal or bake an incredible blueberry pie. Her knowledge of island history amazed everyone who met her and she was well loved by all who knew her.

Alice is survived by her grandson, Allen Nau of Cheboygan, her brother, Roy Baker of Carizozo, New Mexico, two nieces, Beth Ann (Baker, Gesmundo) Huizing of Iron Mountain, MI and Michelle Bayne of Twin Lake, MI and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Al, her daughter Nancy Ellen Nau and her sister Dorothy Ellen Berman.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private at the Restlawn Cemetery in Muskegon, MI. A Celebration of Life service will be held this summer on Bois Blanc island.
