Okay, wordsmiths out there. The poem on the home page by Ila Kimball Calkins has inspired me, and prompted this idea: How about we all write a bit of poetry related to the island?

The place is in your soul, you know the feelings it creates, the drive you have to get back there each year. So ... I'll start it. If anybody else is game, follow suit. If we have enough entries, maybe we can print them up in booklet form and circulate them. And if I'm the only one ... well, then I'll ring it up to a poor idea.

Here goes. I came up with it earlier today.

Silent Song

Stars so bright, sky's dancing light,
A mournful horn, a bugless night.
I conjure these on fancy's flight
To warm the winter, curb its blight.

To dust of road, to plane o'erhead,
To sight of fawn my thoughts are led
When firm in March's icy hold,
My voice cries out "No more the cold!"

Within me deep, the beat is strong,
The Island's pulse, its silent song.
It's always present, never errs
It points me north, my mind prepares.

The ferry's day will rearrive
The cottages will come alive.
And once again I'll gain my goal.
I'll reach Bois Blanc and warm my soul.

I give that thumbs_up! thumbs_up! two thumbs up!

I had composed "Ode to the 9:00 Ferry" in my mind one sunny Saturday morning as I was racing up I75 trying to get there on time without getting a speeding ticket. I thought to myself as I was riding over that I should write it down before I forgot it. Well, I didn't write it down and now it's gone. Crying I'll have to try and recreate the scenario next spring.

Have the same problem, Rob, got one about getting to the ferry on time, but it is on the frig at Al's on the Island. Nice one Charlie....my Grandma's poems, are you familiar with my Grandma?, are in a book, along with some from her Grandchildren and Great Grand Children. It's called "God's Country Up North" ~Poems and Stories of my Early Years....alot about Kalkaska in there too. Still have some at Hawk's I think.

Yes, I am familiar with your Grandma, but I wasn't aware of the book. I'll have to look for it the next time I'm at Hawk's. Thanks.

I enjoyed yours, A.C. I'll be needing a bit of time to come up with one though as the Holidays are keeping me hoppin'. Maybe by New Years I hope... Smile

I am not very good at this... Please feel free to add on or edit..

I was asked to write a poem,
Unfortunately, my creativity is not obtainable at home.
It is neatly packed away, at the island that we stay,
and the key is hanging in my heart.

I enjoyed that "little ditty" as my Grandma would call it.. I too am rusty in the prose dept. but I said I would, so here goes... Keep in mind now that I did this in a few minutes and still don't have a lot of time to really get the creative juices flowing. Confused

I lay listening..
The waves-
Lapping the shore.
The gulls-
Crying for more.
The foghorn-
Distant... Forlorn...

I lay smelling..
The air-
Crisp and clean.
The pine-
Sharp and green.
The water-
Sweet... Pristine...

I lay smiling, in a dream.....

~8-20-1991~ A short visit to the Island~ Written on the Ferry, going home...

Look Away
When leaving the Island,
Look to the mainland.
Don't look back,
Or your heart will sink.

When you get on that boat,
And you start to float..
With the feeling of wanting to stay,
Look Away!

It's the place I want to be.
But my busy life won't let me,
I'm in that "Island Fever" snair.
Shaking Boblo dust from my hair...

So that next boat will be there,
And I will want to be where,
Everyone waves and says hello...
But when you leave...Look Away!

Wow, you folks are good! I will work on one, but all that keeps coming to mind at the moment is "Once You Have Slept on an Island" by Rachel Field. I have copies on the porch at school for those who are not familiar. My neighbor did his own version, which is great, personalizing it to Boblo. I'll have to invite him to this site.
