Hello BBI website fans,
BISI has been out and about with huge success! We would first like to thank everyone who came to Gibson Park Saturday, July 15, 2006. There were over 25 volunteers who helped with the cleanup. This was the most volunteers yet! The park looks great and is ready for phase 2.
BISI would also like to report that the BISI Barrels have successfully caputured 350 gallons of garbage since July 2 at the Island campsites. We are very pleased with the responsible use of these barrels and hope that you all continue to consume responsibly.
We would also like to remind you all that submissions for the August BISI Review are due by Monday, July 24, 2006. Submission topics are completely open, yet must be related to BBI. Please share your voice with us.
One last issue... one of the BISI cats is missing. His name is Brody and he is a very large, long hair gray male cat. He is super friendly and greatly missed by his sister cat Smoki and doggy brothers Tank and Giovanni. He is an outdoor cat but has been out and about from 6 days. If you happen to see him please give us a call 517-896-1843. He went missing 7/13 from the BISI cottage, 2 miles east of the twp dock, before the Tavern.
Have a wonderful day and stay BISI!

Wish I had as much info in my head about conservation as some of the great people on this site! |

It's wonderful to see that so many people on BBI were willing to roll up their sleeves and pitch in for the volunteer clean-up day at Gibson Park. Also, thank you BISI for providing a forum to discuss issues of environmental sustainability on our island, and an interesting newsletter to boot. |

Property put in trust to the school. It is just North of the school.
Thanks for the CD Ron, it worked! |

Hope to see many of you there.

Whatever happened at the state of the township meeting?
Did they talk about green belts?
Is Barb really putting in a trailer park at the bar?
It appears that the BISI effort has helped alot with cleaning up roadside trash. The north shore campsites look much better. Any talk about campsite fees to cover placement of toilet facilities out there?
Thanks for your efforts.

I don't think there is a "trailer park" at the bar. |

When I was over at the bar last week they installed three hook-ups. There was one trailer already. I don't know how many more are expected. I guess that it's coming up before the planning commission soon. |

Yes, Barb has 3 hookups for temporary use not permanent.. Out of town construction workers appreciate saving a buck this way.. |

What's meant by "temporary"?
I'm always amused by the logic that transients should "save a buck", while I pay full taxes.
Whatever happened to the idea of putting a bar, marina, and motel units down at the township dock? I thought zoning was limiting that sort of activity to the area west of Hoffman's. |

Charlie, I think you are allowed to use the hookups, too, if you really want to save a buck... Didn't you post a pic of an Island trailer that was for sale? |

If you want to put a bar or marina down by the dock then buy the properity and do it. As far as the bar goes now it was there for longer then most of you have even heard of the island. The three rentals has been there for many years also until last fall they were pulled out. I don't see a problem on renting hookups for travel trailers. Its been comercial longer then any business on the island. _________________ kevin gibbons |

How about a bar per mile along the main road east to west end? For some, that might make a long drive home? or a short one?
Somone from the Spray Camp, (Ron P. or Biff?) told me the BBI Tavern was built in the late 40s, early 50s shortly after the spray camp was built. This would have been shortly after the lots on Rocky Road were subdivided as Orchard sub.
Nice to have the tavern back open again. Barb has done an awesome job revitalizing it. It was just not the same when it was shut down. A social gathering spot, as it has always been. _________________ Remember, half the people you know are below average. |

I think it was more like the 60's that the bar was built ... all I know is my grandma calkins was against it ...
we did not get electic on the island until 1964 . I know that they were putting it in that year ..... so maybe he was not up and running until 1965 ???
(Edit) I'll find out when the bar was built. (Conis) |

I'm not sure when it was built - I came up the first time in 1970 and it had already been sold to Andy by then - the spray camp was built in either 1957 or 1958 and I thought the bar was already there - But just guessing - I could check with Biff - It was his brother -in-law that built it and they helped stake it out - After they built the bar, they found out that they had built it partially on another lot and Ray Anderson (owner) had to buy another lot, or a part of one!! I'm sure there wasn't any drinking going on when it was staked out!!! _________________ 47 years in a row driving 600 miles to get here!!! |

I'm pretty sure Andy and Opal had it by the late '60s. We didn't come to BBI until 1973, but I seem to recall Opal telling us they'd bought it in '67 or '68. I could be wrong; it's been a long time.
