Maybe we should consider the British approach. You know how they have all those quaint names like "The Priory" or "The Birches" as the first line of their address.

We could have:

The White House on Sand Bay

The Reynolds Wrap--around at the West End

Engel's End of the Earth

Duncan Do's and Do-nots

The Pine Conis of Rocky Road

and so on.

Then if you guys need to add to those nice cottage names all that less than poetic scientific stuff so emergency providers can get to you, that is just fine with me!

By the way, speaking of appropriate cottage names, I have thought that "Calera" would be a good one for our cottage. There is a wine named Calera. When I read the label, I learned that Calera is the Spanish word for lime kiln. And as some of you know, the remnants of an old lime kiln is on our property and my wife Grace teaches Spanish. So it seems a very appropriate name.

Miller Time Square is nice. On the other hand, it might bring in a lot of riff raff looking for a tavern on the west end of the island. Then again, with the Miller's beer and the Duncan's donots, we could feed most of the island and have a lot of fun doing it.

After that post, Conis, I think it is going to be hard for me to ever see the name "Conis" and not visualize a pine tree shaped "air freshener" dangling from the rearview mirror of a beat up old 4-wheel drive island pickup. I can smell that mix of burning oil, exhaust leaking through the rusty floorboards, eau de deer camp and fresh, artificially-scented island air even now--mmmmmm!

You sure that isn't the Spruce Conis instead of Pine Conis looks pretty pitchy to me.

HEY!

In the Spirit of BBI... If I am going to hang something off my mirror, it might be something like a used sock (handy for checking the oil) or maybe a pair of foam dice if I want the sporty-uptown-smell me look.

BTW any mirror decorations need to be properly seasoned by either placing them under the hood for a summer, or used as a floorboard dust plug. Get the right texture and aroma.

Can't just jump into this stuff. What a bunch or rookies!

Kevin:

That is an interesting question and it sent me to my dictionary.

I could not find "riff raff." But I did find "raffish" which is no doubt the word that "riff raff" is derived from; in short, riff raff are those who act in a raffish way.

Given that, riff raff are people "characterized by a carefree or funloving unconventionality; rakish."

The answer, in short, is that riff raff is you and, as best as I can tell, lots of others who post here regularly! See you at the Miller Time Square tavern!

My Grand dad Riff descended from the Raff family. They came from the Doofus clan.

I think the family traits are genetic. Neither fatal or curable.

I think I will stick with the majority and be in the riff raff clan and let the SQUARE TAVERN people stay at the west end. No pun intendend! I'm really glad that you put me in the catagory of a lot of other people that post on this site. I'm proud to be with them. I hope they feel the same even though I don't know who they are. At least there is some movement on this site. It is getting pretty dead

It is a natural cycle and we are just gettin a bit tired of talking about the island and more interested in going to spend time on it. I think by next fall, we will once more have lots to discuss.

By the way, I will call Plaunt, but does anyone know if he has any kind of regular schedule starting up before May 1?

I heard the ferry will run on schedule as soon as it comes out of dry dock. I suppose next week?

Kevin .. I agree with you .. if we have to have signs .. I would rather see a name of a road then a number ..

The actual name of the road that runs along the shore is Huron Ave. A developer came in, Collins, and made a map of the island for his customers, and changed the name to Bob-Lo drive. That would have been at the time when all those roads were put in by Richardson South of Lake Mary.

Which name should be used?

Thats sort of the problem. I suppose which ever name appears on current maps. Most recent.

I have also heard "Boblo Drive" called Huron Trail and South Shore Drive, and see some maps where the north shore trail is marked Boblo Drive, and Firetower marked Central Drive. On plat maps, Rocky Road is shown as Old Orchard Lane

Whatever they are called, Road names need to be decided on, fixed and registered. I also believe street signs of some sort need to be implemented. The smaller and least obtrusive, the better.

My vote goes to Huron. Because the Lake is such a presence, it is an appropriate name. Because there was that Boblo in the Detroit area, Boblo as a formal name of the road could be a bit misleading. And finally, the word Boblo just doesn't have a great ring to it, in my opinion (I know that some who have used Boblo for a long time might have a different opinion).

Maybe I missed it, but does anyone know who has the legal authority to give formal names to roads--or change them if they already have names?

Believe this falls under the Mackinac County Road commission to make a final descision.

We have now come full circle to the title subject, Township Addressing System. The county might attempt to assign names that people here do not like.

If the township gets ahead of the county and comes up with road names and an addressing system, the county may incorporate the local system into the county system, if it is done properly and with input by the citizens of the township.

Why should the county mess with a township system that works? But, as it stands right now, the twp. has no real system in place, therefore the county may be tempted to do it for BBI.

The county has contacted the township in the past on this very subject, but I suppose the easiest thing to do is let the county worry about it. Rolling Eyes
