This plant is much more common downstate. It is not common on BBI. Whereas, the common buttercup is everywhere along the roads right now, this is hidden way back in the swamps in only a few places.

This is a buttercup. So far I have found and posted four of the six on BBI. The last two are called Hooked Crowfoot and Cursed Crowfoot.

PostPosted: Mon Jun 23, 2008 9:05 am    Post subject: HELLEBORINE Reply with quote

Last August 2nd I posted a picture calling it hound's-tongue. I told everyone to pull it up because it made burrs that sticks to clothing.

I miss-identified. It is actually a helleborine orchid. I have gone back and edited to correct my error. Sorry.

I actually went around my yard and pulled a bunch of them up. I have found that there are many all over the island, and more are coming up in my yard.

According to the professionals, this plant has not been found here, and that threw me off track. There is a Royal Helleborine in Vermont that is royal red. This one is mostly maroon and further investigation is needed to see if it is Epipactis helleborine or Epipactis atrorubens.

Found inland at North Shore up a trail in the trail. It has large basal leaves, a long flower stalk, and small blue flowers at the end of the stalk.

Mike how about these .. Can you tell me what they are? Especially the one that reminds me of a strawberry plant. It spreads like a strawberry plant and has yellow flowers instead of white.

Both found on Snake Island.

Your links took me to a wild ride up a sand dune and a naked drummer, but I think I can ID your flower from your description.

Silverweed. Look at the underside of the leaves.

You can find it in this collection and let me know if I got it right.

The other flower is an indian paint-brush.

One of the reasons for posting all these flowers is so people can identify what flower they have come across. Go to the Album, select the Wild Flower Album, and you will probably find the flower and it's name.

The plant is low to the ground. They are out right now. You have to look close because they are small.
