Note how the opposite leaves are bonded together. Maybe that is why the settlers thought it would bond bones together.

These only grow in wet alkaline places. Once they have flowered they form little red pods in place of the flowers. The stems feel tacky/sticky to the touch. They are in many places on BBI.

You would think you had an orchid coming up when you notice this growing. It has some pretty purple flowers and nice leaves. IT IS AN ORCHID I suppose it is named due to the shape of the leaves. It produces burrs that stick all too well to your clothes. Pull it. It is a common weed. PLEASE DO NOT PULL IT!

This one was hard for me to find the name. It did not look like a bell. I returned to where I had seen some and realized that the leaves and stem had little hooked hairs all over them. It made them feel scratchy and they tangled up in the other plants around them. It's called being "adherent". This is how the plant holds itself up.

These things have a phallic look to them. Flower looks to its left on the stalk making a counterclockwise spiral looking down from above. They grow in very wet places.

I found more. They are not as compact and have leaves as compared to the first picture of them that had scant leaves near the ground. This picture is much nicer.

Here is a rose that is an escape from past gardens. You wonder how it ended up in the middle of nowhere on BBI. Sure is pretty though.

9/26/07, Correction. This is not a wrinkled rose per Ellen Weatherbee. This is :

I must emphasis the MINT in the name. I originally thought that this was a variation of the previous flower, Kalm's Lobelia, because it grows right in with it on the wet beaches. I noted that it had a square stem and the leaves were opposite, and then I crushed and smelled the leaves. Wow what a smell. I now have a little bottle of cut up leaves to smell.

I am enjoying looking and then researching to name of what I found.

Here are two types of sundews that I never thought I could find on my own. You can see these at Snake Island and a few other places around the island. Can you see the little drops reflecting the sun? It is not dew, but a sticky liquid that the plant makes to catch food.

It would be neat if you picked a few of each one and dried them in a book

Here is a flower that has really neat petals. It is common right now in wetland spots on BBI. I tried to brush off the stick before taking the picture, but discovered it to be an inch worm.

This is so common right now on BBI that I almost overlooked it. It is sometimes called Five Fingers because of the claw like appearance of the leaves.

This is a Speedwell. Note how the bottom petal is a little smaller then the other three. Also note how small they are by finding the fly setting on a stub of something the deer ate. I am not totally confident that it is a water speedwell, but that is the closest description I could find. Check me out and see if you can nail it.

I think this is one of the best, and I found it in my front yard in the rocks of the old dock at Sand Bay. I have also found it on a point on round Island, so I'll add that one. Apparently, the seed pods explode if you touch them, hence, the name.
