I have spent some time lately "stitching" together a very large aerial picture of the entire island. I'm getting a 2 foot by 3 foot map of it to see how it looks. The file size is 40 Mb. It is infrared photography from 1998.

If it turns out looking good, would anyone be interested in a copy? It wouldn't be cheap, somewhere in the 40 or 50 dollar range.

I'm going to put a sample in the album showing the clarity.

I'd love a map like this!

It would be cool to have then and now pics, for comparison of the changes.

I just got my 2 foot by 3 foot map with a white border. The border makes it a little smaller. It turned out great. I'm thinking of placing it at Hawks to be a sample of what "the customer" would be getting.

I wonder if I should copywrite it?

The aerial photos are sat. shots possibly taken by a machine? I'm not sure about the legalities in that respect.. I would put a credit but not a copyright.. Something like collated or produced by.. Cool Nice work, Mike..

Mike - the pictures on that web site are neat - I did the same thing you did and cut it out to the exact shape of the island and have it hanging in my shop - It really gives you another perpective of the island.

It turned out 20.5 inches high by 33.3 inches wide. I can get it in a bigger size, but it costs a lot more. I do have the option of having a border or not. I thought a border would be better because a frame might cover up some of the picture.

It is a mosaic created from many small pictures. The pictures are public. So, yes, I will have to dig deep to see if it can be copywrited. I did create a mosaic image.

Definitely keep the border.. It also helps to keep fingers off the image itself.. Cool That is a nice size..

I have no expertise in this area of law. But I googled "copyright" and there is lots of good info at (not surprisingly) the US Copyright office site. I found this:

"What Is Not Protected by Copyright?

Several categories of material are generally not eligible for federal copyright protection. These include among others:

. . .

Works consisting entirely of information that is common property and containing no original authorship (for example: standard calendars, height and weight charts, tape measures and rulers, and lists or tables taken from public documents or other common sources)"

Since you put together maps from public documents, it might not be copyright-able. On the other hand, in light of your artistic work putting them together, maybe it is. I am not sure.

More importantly, however, I think the copyright process would not, as a practical matter, provide you with much protection since the protection is only as good as your ability to enforce it. If someone started copying the map and selling it, you would have to either attempt to enforce your rights or pay a lawyer to do so. Most likely, the expense of enforcing your rights would be more than the revenue you might get from selling the pics--especially since you will almost certainly have a somewhat limited market for pix of BBI.

The other way to protect yourself is simply to keep track of evidence you have that you put this map together and the date that you did it (including perhaps your posts here on the site). I think that can provide some protection, though the gov website can probably give more info on that (as well as some here on the site who sell their creative work). But even that would require enforcement--and unfortunately, sometimes that just isn't practical from a financial standpoint.

Thanks for the advice. I possess the file I created that is used to make the mosaic. I guess that is some protection. The thing is big and would be hard to scan, that is another protection. I can live with that.

I could also do just the West End or East End on a large poster using other huge files that I made.

Mike... you might recall I did that a couple years ago with 1000x1000 BW aerial photos.... I have some HUGE high res files... Wall sized! It took a long time to assemble the individual images. So I know what an effort you have undertaken.

You would have to count on Dougs advice as far as copyright.

My thoughts are that this information (individual maps) is public domain info and not subject to copyright since it is government funded and was intended to be public information.

Likewise an assemblage of same can't be copyrighted since the source isn't. I wouldn't worry about any of it.

If someone wants to compete, they can go through all the effort you did.

First, more about the image. It will say on it - BOIS BLANC ISLAND, MICHIGAN 1998, Mosaic Created by Michael J. White, January 2008. It is 9440 pixels wide by 5808 pixels high.

Cost:
24x36 $45 laminated $57
34X44 $60
44X66 $95

My address is PO Box 861, Pointe Aux Pins, MI 49775. Send your check to me along with your address.

The cost is a reflection of what it costs me to have them made plus shipping. I have added a small amount to cover my work.

At this point, yes, I would put a copy at Hawks, if they will let me.

People don't usually like to buy something unless they see it first.

Here is a low res. version - http://www.bois-blanc.com/phpBB2/album_page.php?pic_id=1952

Just got back to the island yesterday after being gone for a month and putting 5000 miles on the old 1984 Escort wagon.

Waiting at the post office was a 34" by 44" poster of the island. This size has an actual picture size of 23 X 40 3/8. It looks great. I think the customer will be happy. Anyone else want one? $60.

I suspect that the 44" X 66" version would also turn out crisp and clear. The picture will fit this width length ratio nicely. Pretty steep at $95 though. It would be the perfect thing to have at the tavern or the store though.

We saw a lot of places and the car only overheated three times. A new radiator cap may have solved the problem.

I can also create posters of just the East or West Ends of BBI, or just the South Shore. The sizes and prices would be the same. I suppose I could even do a custom mosaic of anywhere in the state, but that would involve more money.

It is dark navy colored. You can see Gull Island, the shallowest part of Zela Shoals and other shallow water features. I did do a little "artistic" work to blend everything together to create a uniform "lake" around the island.
