Hello, just curious when the Ferry starts up? I thought last year it was towards the end of April? Also is there still an ice bridge, I thought I read that it is supposed to be broken up soon? Thanks

You're right, it is usually not much earlier than mid-April, and only weather-permitting at that time. This year, I'd expect it to be on the late side. We're hoping the boat will run by the third or last weekend in April.

The earliest I ever ferried across was April 8th, and there were still large ice floes to be reckoned with. That was 15 years ago and we'd had a relatively mild winter.

I read in an earlier post somewhere that the icebreaker would come through the channel breaking up the ice--is that something they schedule and announce? Would it be in the Cheboygan paper?

Even if I can't get over to the island in the first few weeks of April, I am thinking of coming north with my son for a day or two and, if we knew when the icebreaker was going through, maybe go then. I know it would not be much of a show, but it would make cottage season seem just a bit closer.

Kevin--do you know?

Thanks.

Doug I don't know when the ice breaker is going through. I believe that the shipping channel is open so it could be anytime. That will most likely hurt Curt so he can't run. Because the Ice comes down from the west and plugs up outside the river for a while.

Just got word that the ferry from St. Ignace to Mackinac will be running tomorrow - April 4... which I think is a good sign. But I've heard that the ice in that are moves out a little quicker than in Cheboygan due to the currents...but who knows.

Is this the day we might get word about when the first ferry is going to run? Or is that tomorrow (the 15th?)

There is no ice behind the dock here and no ice to be seen anywhere. You'd have to call Curt and ask him himself when he plans to run. None of us can answer that for you.

Rumor has it that Curt may run the mail Thursday, the 17th, and a shopping trip Thursday or Friday. You would need to contact Plaunt to see if it is true.

I did talk to Curt today and he did say he was running Thursday and this week-end. I was more interested in the 30th, but no trips are planned as of the moment. Regular schedule May 1.

A call from Plaunt's (Laurie), confirms a mail trip Thursday. It leaves Cheboygan at 9:30 and returns at 12:30. So that will be his first run.

There will be a shopping trip Friday. It will leave Cheboygan at 9:30, Leave the Island at 10:30, and Leave Cheboygan again at 7pm. That will make for a nice long day of shopping.

I got dressed in my aborigine cloths and headed toward the dock to shake my spear at the big canoe with no paddle. Problem though was that I was running late and missed the excitement. I knew I was too late when, near the post office, I see before me a long line of cars coming my way with Presque Isle Electric in the lead.

I needed to tell them about a downed line, so flagged them down, thereby creating the first traffic jam of the season.
