I'm guessing that G stands for generation, and that is as far as I can go. _________________ mwhite@wildblue.net

Mike's Correct. Though each Generation is slightly different technology depending on the carrier.
1G was the old style analog transmission methods, and there are a bunch of different 1G analog protocols.
2G is when GSM (Nextel Cingular) and CDMA (Sprint Verizon) are introduced
some phones still use 2G today. 2G has also been augmented with EDGE (AT&T/Cingular) and 1xRTT (Sprint & Verizon)
3G is what basically all phones are designed to run on today. There a few different 3G protocols that AT&T use (all kind of under the "3G" name) and Verizon and Sprint use EV-DO
4G is pretty new in the US. Verizon has plans to develop an LTE 4G network (in which AT&T will also use an LTE network), while Sprint has already rolled out their 4G WiMax (which is actually similar to 802.11 protocol which is used in your regular wifi routers for your computers) network to larger cities in the US.
Other than the fundamental signaling technology being different across each technology, the speeds also vary.
EV-DO can reach up to 4.9Mbit.
WiMax can get up to 144Mbit.
LTE can transmit up to 360Mbit
1xRTT is about .14Mbit
These speeds are all best case scenarios however. The speed can change due to factors like signal strength, your rate of speed (if you're driving in a car your data speeds will be much slower), quality of your antenna, distance from towers etc...
If you're looking for a data modem (like the mifi) you should check into which service has the best coverage in your area first, then determine which has the best price/speed. Also watch out because many carry data usage limits which can get very costly if you go over.
Also some phones can act as a mifi router. The Verizon Palm Pre phone can broadcast a wifi signal (much like the mifi) for your devices. I believe an Android phone can be hacked to do the same as well. _________________ -Kacy Martin | KacyMartin@gmail.com
