Snow and Ice conditions are my specialty. I can answer that, but I don't know the details of how many people are here.

It has been getting down to around zero each night and the winds are calm. The channel has quickly frozen over. Predictions are that this weather will continue for another week. I wonder who to contact about getting the Coast Guard to start the process of closing the channel to shipping. There seems to always be some yahoo that likes to break ice each year. Who calls the Coast Guard? I may call around about that.

The snow is mostly the remains after the big thaw. It has formed a hard base maybe 3 or 4 inches thick. On that are an inch or so of fluff. It is possible to snowmobile. I was out cutting a trail yesterday. It is OK but more would be better. Right now though, it is better not to have much snow on top of the forming ice bridge.

Any other questions?

Hey, my boss just told me there are about 55 to 60 on the island.

I'd start by calling either District 9 Headquarters (http://www.uscg.mil/d9/), though according to this link (http://www.uscg.mil/lantarea/iip/) the 2011 ice season hasn't opened yet, which means its still fair game.

You might also have some luck with the Ice Patrol unit (http://www.uscg-iip.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=56&Itemid=54) which is actually located in Sarnia, but appears as though it is staffed out of CT.
